Name Server (NS)

A Name Server (NS) is a specialized server that maintains the directory of domain names and their corresponding IP addresses. It is the "librarian" of the internet.

When you register a domain, you must specify Authoritative Name Servers. These servers hold the master copies of your DNS records (A, MX, CNAME, etc.). For a website to function, the domain registrar must point to the correct Name Servers provided by your hosting company or a third-party DNS provider like Cloudflare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Redundancy. If one Name Server goes offline, the secondary server handles the requests. This prevents a single point of failure from taking your entire domain offline.

While often fast, it can take up to 24-48 hours. This delay is due to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) caching the old records until their TTL (Time to Live) expires.
