Canonical Name Record (CNAME)

A Canonical Name Record (CNAME) record maps an alias name to a true or “canonical” domain name. It is commonly used to point subdomains to a main server.

For example, you might create a CNAME record for blog.example.com that points to example.com. If the IP address of example.com changes, the CNAME record automatically follows it, reducing maintenance. Note: A CNAME cannot exist alongside other records for the same name, and it cannot be used for the root domain.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. A CNAME must point to another domain name. If you have an IP, use an A Record.
