Fill: The Interior Color

The Fill is the color, gradient, or pattern applied to the area inside a closed path. It provides the “surface” of your vector shapes.

Fills give shapes their weight and presence. While a path defines the boundary, the fill defines the identity. For example, to create a “No Smoking” sign, you would create a circular path with a red stroke and leave the fill “empty” (none) so that the cigarette icon behind it remains visible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, but the software will usually “ghost” a straight line between the start and end points to close the area for the fill.

A fill of “None” makes the interior of the shape completely transparent, allowing objects behind it to be seen.

In vector software, you typically use a “Clipping Mask” to put a photo inside a shape, though some programs allow “Pattern Fills” made from images.

Opacity fades everything (including effects like shadows). “Fill” only fades the pixels, leaving layer styles/effects at 100% visibility.

You design a small “tile” of art and drag it into the Swatches panel to turn it into a repeatable fill for any shape.

A technical rule that determines which parts of overlapping or complex paths are filled and which are left hollow.
